Neighbors at this apartment complex noticed smoke coming from this downstairs apartment unit and contacted 911. It was not known if anyone was inside or not. The door was locked so forced entry was necessary. Someone was in the apartment, a small puppy. He made his presence known. When the door was being pried open he inserted his paw. When  they had to release to get another bite at the door jam the pup yelped loud and clear. A few seconds later when the door was opened the grateful pup exited the apartment, turned to behold his rescuers and then took off for the hills. The pup can be seen at the feet of the firemen in image # 4 above.

The cause of this fire was  food on the stove left unattended. Fortunately damage was minimized due to the  2 dry chemical extinguishers contained in the vent-a-hood. It can be seen in  the last image.
