On a cold and wet November evening a passerby noticed 2 boys that appeared to be sitting in the mud near a corner of a construction area at the 9200 block of West Point Blvd, in the city. The Sun was almost set over the horizon and the weather was dishing out more cold, slow soaking rain, as it had in the past 2 days. The boys  who had been riding their bikes,  laid their bikes aside and had ventured, for some unknown reason, into the construction site.  One boy had his boots sink approximately 12 inches into the mud and was able to eventually wiggle out with help of PD and was recovered by first units arriving on the scene. His brother however, had sunk a bit deeper into the mud than PD or medical units were willing to go. In order to keep the boy from going into shock, a blanket was thrown to him to help keep him warm. Both boys had been trapped in that position for almost 2 hours. At this point, due to the rain and cold weather,  the life threatening danger of hyperthermia became a real possibility.

The fire department was summoned and responded to the scene with the necessary equipment to make the rescue. Fire Chief Mike Ikerd was the first out on the ladder to make an assessment of the situation. At length he had to be dug out with a shovel and was then quickly ushered into the 2nd Medstar.  Neither of the boys was transported to the hospital. Thankfully the person passing by cared enough to get involved. Otherwise the outcome could have been tragic.
