Thanksgiving morning 2002, White Settlement Fire Department received a call from West Worth Village, a nearby community, requesting mutual aid on a structure fire. At approximately 4:30 AM White Settlement responded with Pump 3 and Quint 1 and 7 personnel to the Shady Oaks Country Club. A fire was reported to 911 by a security guard at approximately 4:10 AM. A fire had broken out in the mechanical room in the basement, probably in the furnace, of this historic and well known retreat of some of the golf worlds elite golfers, such as the legendary  Ben Hogan. Fire Fighters from White Settlement reported to incident command and were asked to provide rehab for the first arriving units. Fire Fighter Mike Cochrane, Cpt. Mike Chandler, and Lt.Craig Slovak answered the call and took the nozzle. The fire generated tremendous amounts of smoke in the building and made it difficult for the first units on the scene to determine where the origin of the fire was. Command decided to request mutual aid from several other surrounding communities. In totality. all the units that responded with West Worth Village Fire Department were, River Oaks FD, Sansom Park FD, Saginaw FD, Blue Mound FD, Lake Worth FD, Benbrook FD, Aledo FD, JRB FD and White Settlement FD. Approximately 60 fire fighting personnel responded to this fire scene. Over 400 people had to make other plans for their Thanksgiving feast as this facility had received heavy smoke damage from top to bottom. No estimate of damage is available at this time. One fire fighter from White Settlement suffered a broken wrist as he swept through the fire with the nozzle. He was treated and transported by Med-Star Para-Medics who were staged on the scene.
