Hi Kids,
Thanks for visiting The White Settlement Fire Department Kids Zone. This page is here to help you with fire safety. Lets face it kids, fire can be dangerous. You should never, ever play with fire. It can burn you badly or even cause you to lose your life. Lots of times fire happens by accident. When it does you have a really good chance of escaping if you know what to do. Lets go over a few basic fire safety tips.
"When you in trouble and its not for fun, get on the phone and call 911" Learn how to call 911 and when to call! Know your address and phone number and what the emergency is. As the poem above says, 911 is not for fun, but when you have a real emergency pick up the phone and call.
When you have an emergency this is the first thing you should do.

Call a family meeting. Have everyone in your family talk about what to do in case of a fire. Everyone should talk about how to get out of the house and where to meet outside. Know which way you will get out before a fire happens. Since fire creates smoke and heat, it is a good idea to practice getting out of the house by getting on your hands and knees or crawling on your stomach. If you try to walk out like everything is OK you may breathe in smoke and this could hurt you. Remember, stay low. Once you leave the fire do not go back in. You may not be able to get back out. If someone is trapped, tell the firemen when they get there. Because of the equipment they wear they can go in safely and help anyone one inside. Remember, get out fast and wait for the firemen. Do not go back in for any reason. Practice your plan at least 2 times a year.
Don't be like unlucky Luke. He did not have a plan and did not know what to do!

Make sure mom and dad change the batteries in your smoke detectors and test them weekly. If the batteries go dead, you will not know if a fire starts while you are asleep. If you do not have smoke detector, call the fire department and they can get you one. Smoke detectors save lives. Never take the batteries out of a smoke detector if it starts chirping and annoys you. Get a new one if you need to.

Ask your parents to purchase at least 2 fire extinguishers. One for the kitchen and one for the garage. They are inexpensive and could possibly save your home from burning down. Make sure you buy a fire extinguisher that can put out all the different types of fires that can happen in a home. Just like your smoke detectors, check your fire extinguishers from time to time to make sure the gage is still in the green. An empty fire extinguisher will do you no good at all. Remember only try to use a fire extinguisher on small fires. Any fire bigger than a small bed will need the fire department to put it out. Even if you do put out a fire, go ahead and call the fire department anyway. Ask your local fire department to show you how to use your new fire extinguishers. They will be happy to do so.
